Cars We Buy: Opel

Opel is a German car manufacturer that Adam Opel founded in 1863. The interesting thing about the company's history, though, and one of its most notable features--aside from being GM owned for many years now--is how it started as an automaker with sewing machines before moving on to bicycles. In 1899 they bought their first motorcar production plant, which belonged to Friedrich Lutzman; two more years later, they would set up shop independently after buying his stake share in the business (and motorcycles).

In 1902, Opel partnered with the French carriage maker Darracq to create a car only for Europe. The partnership ended in 1906 when they had enough expertise and were able to make their own cars. One of these first models was introduced at Hamburg's Motor Show that same year (1902). Cars were made from 1907 onwards by Opel until 1911 after an infamous fire destroyed almost all production facilities except one small corner where sewing machines continued manufacturing, while displaced workers tried desperately to rebuild what was once lost.

Opel has made a point in staying ahead of the game and bringing quality to the masses at affordable prices. Lately, though, it seems that Opel might be trying to break into a whole new class, one with the other German heavy contenders, Mercedes, BMW and Porsche, where luxury is paramount, with the introduction of the 2008 Insignia.
