Most people know that the company Renault is big and successful. But they may not be aware of how it came about, with Louis as its founder in France back in 1899. He was an engineer, and his two brothers ran the finances while he took care of all things mechanical. It wasn’t until much later that a partnership with Nissan led to their rapid growth from being among many car manufacturers to occupying a fourth place on the list thanks to around 1 million units sold annually worldwide!

Louis Renault was a man of many talents. He not only invented the direct-drive system on his De Dion-Bouton tricycle, but he also patented it and later turned that initial design into an all-terrain vehicle capable of four-wheel drive when necessary for racing purposes. Through such races, Louis became known throughout France and other nations because those were the competitions in which he entered cars under the new name "Renault".

After 2000, it launched a series of less successful vehicles like the Avantime and the Vel Satis and continued successfully with older series like the Clio, Laguna and Megane. Now the government owns 15,7% of the company, which has since bought Romanian car manufacturers Dacia and the South Korean Samsung, not to mention 20% of Volvo (latest rumours say that Renault is interested in a total buy out).
