Founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson in Gothenburg on April 14th, 1927, Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles. The company began as a carmaker but soon switched to focus on safety after the death of Assar's wife in an accident while driving their previous brand. With this vision for safe motoring made clear from the start, Volvo quickly became one of Europe’s top automakers with its innovative designs and never-ending commitment to quality engineering.

The name Volvo was originally registered in 1915 by SKF AB for a series of ball bearings, but it is now used as the trademark on all its bearing products. Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson first started production with 10 prototypes before setting up their car-manufacturing business within the company, which currently operates under a wholly-owned subsidiary called "Volvo Cars."
