Cars We Buy: Ford

It was a cold day in 1902 when Henry Ford walked into 12 investors offices with $28,000 cash. They agreed to give him the money, and he would start his new company at 40 years old. Mr Ford opened up shop on Bagley Street, Detroit, Michigan, where Dodge Brothers' first factory started as well! In 1903 after founding the firm, they began labelling their models chronologically, starting from Model A all way through K, then S being its last right-hand steering car model made by them before making left-hand steering cars only that are still produced today.

The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, making it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and lay out the basics of mass production principles in 1913 by introducing the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.

This organizational innovation in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.

Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.
