Maurice Wilks loved his jeep. It was old and beat-up, but he never gave up on it even when the engine finally broke down one day halfway through a cattle drive in Wyoming. He could have used this as an opportunity to buy himself something new - after all, Rover had a long history of making cars already - but Maurice didn't want just any car. Sure they were dependable and classy, which would be perfect for someone like him who owned farmland outside Birmingham that needed to get around quickly if trouble arose nearby; however, Maurice wanted more than reliable transportation: he also wanted adventure!

Jeeps had already proven their utility during WWII, and civil versions of the military vehicles were on the verge of entering mass production. This was a great time for Wilks to outdo Jeep's supremacy with his design that would function as an army vehicle but could also compete in civilian markets. Luckily, Rover-factory heads soon realized how successful this new type of car could be when it debuted at Brussels International Auto Show on September 11th 1947.

The first Land Rover was revealed at the Amsterdam Auto Show on April 30, 1948, where it caught the eye of many. Far mode orders than the maximum that could be handled poured in, making a celebrity out of the freshly-launched vehicle. Built on a Jeep chassis, the Land Rover's main selling points were its rugged, lightweight construction and ability to cover rough terrain effortlessly.
