Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft's 1901 Mercedes and Karl Benz's 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, widely regarded as the first internal combustion engine in a self-propelled automobile. The fuel was not gasoline, but rather a volatile petroleum spirit called ligroin with the catchy slogan "the best or nothing".

In 1958, Mercedes-Benz began a partnership with Studebaker to sell their cars in the United States. The company ended business two years later, but some American dealerships converted into Mercedes-Benz dealerships when it ended its operations in 1966. Over 50 years ago, this was an innovative move for safety and technology features that became common on other vehicles much later; only now do we see these same standards being met by all major car companies worldwide today!
