Leighton Buzzard

In Leighton Buzzard, there is a debate about when the town was established. Some historians believe that it may have been from 571, and others say the 12th century by Dean of Lincoln in whose diocese this place lay at the time. According to some versions, "Leighton" came from Old English Lēah-tūn, meaning 'farm in clearing woods' while others say it derived its name as "Buzzard".

Many of the storefronts today are built where those in previous centuries would have been. This layout allowed for workshops and living quarters behind narrow frontages on a long, thin plot with alleyways connecting to other plots. The original plan was designed so as many tradespeople as possible could be near large crowds at twice-weekly markets by having these stores within walking distance from the town centre rather than outside it like before when there were smaller markets in more central locations Church Square or Bridge Street.

The River Ouzel is also a key part of the heritage and history in this town, as it was historically used to divide people within Leighton Buzzard. The river played an important role in battles between Britons- defending their land from Saxons invaders- four hundred years ago, as well as more recently when fighting against Vikings who were much stronger than they had been previously.
